Grade 3 and Grade 4
Reading: The students use the Harcourt series in Reading. In this series they will be asked to define vocabulary, read stories, spell words correctly, summarize and comprehend what they read. Each student is also asked to complete a reading log nightly. They may choose from a newspaper, magazine, or book to complete 15 minutes a night of reading.
Math: The students are working from the Saxon series. This series is repetitive in its daily lessons, revisiting skills learned previously. Each student is asked to master their multiplication facts, as well as continue to work on addition, subtraction, division and geometric shapes.
The students have a classroom checkbook that they are asked to make deposits, credits, and keep balanced. This will help them in their near future of budgeting money.
Writing: Each child is asked to use the 6 – writing traits. We practice this in our weekly writing. The students practice the writing process every time they write. They are asked to follow through with each piece from Pre-write to Publishing.
Science: The Scott Foresman series is the book we use for Science. We use this series to learn information, and then we try and create an activity that will visually help us learn. Planting our own seeds and watching them grow is one way we will learn through our activities.
Social Studies: The series we use for Social Studies is from Macmillan/McGraw –Hill. We cover from Our Communities to Our Country’s Regions. We will know all the names and capitals of the fifty states. We will be doing an activity using, Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown, to contact our friends and families around the country and in other countries. Moreover, we will learn about the people around us and far from us.
Each student is asked to complete a weekly folder each week. This folder consists of Math skills, Editing skills, Reading skills, and Vocabulary.
When a class assignment is completed students are aware of what they can do next…They have several “Think Tank”, academic activities, they can choose from to complete.
Our classroom is a place for students to learn, and succeed. Everyday we start with our special intentions and prayers, reminding ourselves that we were made in the image and likeness of God!
